Saturday at IDS Vancouver 2018 is open to both trade and the public and gives consumers insider knowledge of design. Trends, ideas and inspiration are just some of the themes that are explored in this powerhouse speaker series.

Hip Hop Architecture Workshop

Level 100 Seminar Room | $20

Led by the Hip Hop Architect and IDS Vancouver keynote speaker Michael Ford, the Hip Hop Architecture Workshop is a full-day immersive session for children aged 11 to 14 using hip hop culture as a catalyst to introduce youth to architecture and design. The young participants will explore hip hop as a revolutionary approach to understanding, conceiving, and generating architecture for a just city.

There is no typical student for The Hip Hop Architecture Workshop. Michael Ford’s students are aspiring architects, urban planners, hip hop artists, computer game creators, interior designers, industrial designers, and more!

Lunch will be provided for all young participants. Hurry up, there are only 40 spots available!

Join Vancouver Living for a lively and informative panel discussion with top luxury designers Jamie BanfieldJamie PrydeRebecca Hay and Trisha Isabey, moderated by Vancouver Living’s Bianca Solterbeck. On the Caesarstone Stage, these savvy designers will discuss their personal take on redefining extravagance and share tips on how to bring luxury into your home.

Hot New Next: Championship Round

GRAY Stage

HOT NEW NEXT is a dynamic competition celebrating the innovative ideas moving Pacific Northwest design forward. The winners from the regional competitions, held earlier this year, will face off in this “Dragon’s Den” -style program, presenting a rapid-fire pitch of a compelling new design-related concept or product to an expert panel. Judges will offer realtime feedback on their pitches and product, and determine the ultimate winner, who will win a cash prize, judge mentorship, and the designation of truly being the next big thing in Pacific Northwest design.

Susanna Bjorklund

Caesarstone Stage

Helsinki-based trend analyst Susanna Björklund uncovers the futures, conducts research on customer centricity, changes in consumer behaviour and values, and implements new design processes. Susanna has worked as a fashion designer and as a journalist specialized in fashion, living, interiors, design and futures trends. Since 2015, Susanna has  been curating Signals, the trend installation of the Habitare fair in Helsinki, combining societal with interior and living trends. Signals has gained wide recognition both in Finland and internationally. She runs ENNE, works as a lecturer, researcher, journalist and also runs classes to emerging talents in Lahti Institute of Design and Helsinki Design School.

Modern Prefab and Mass Timber: Architecture of the Future

The dream of accessible, modern prefab construction is within reach, and the Pacific Northwest is leading the charge. From higher energy performance to lower costs in the design and construction process, prefab is often better for the environment, and it opens up the possibility of owning a modern home to a wider range of consumers. We’ll dive deep into the residential design and construction process with leading firms, and explore the future of mass timber in the architecture of our cities– all while viewing real-world, gorgeous examples of this emerging trend.

Vancouver-based designer Riley McFerrin and LA-based designer Bari Ziperstein in conversation with Haily Zaki, Founder of LA Design Festival. Set against the backdrop of regionality, the discussion focuses on the relationship between the work they create and the environment that influences the material they use, as well as their design process and techniques.

This event is part of THE MIX, a unique program at IDS Vancouver that includes displays, installations and talks both onsite and off. The program is in partnership with the LA Design Festival and Design Milk

Brian Gluckstein: The Art of Home

In conversation with Benjamin Moore Colour & Design Expert and Cityline Contributor Sharon Grech, Brian Gluckstein will lead the audience through a collection of beautiful spaces that are at once chic and livable, while sharing ways to incorporate soulful elements such as art, accessories, and other design details into residential spaces. Pulling examples from his new book “Brian Gluckstein: The Art of Home,” Brian looks beyond the trends to share the art of designing a home with the comfort and personal expression that is essential to any aesthetic.
