Designathon Workshop

Level 100 Seminar Room | $20

We are honoured to partner with Designathon Works for this one-day event reserved for children aged 8 to 12. Facilitated by Global Children’s Designathon, these workshops have been held in the Netherlands, Germany, Philippines, Croatia, Uganda and Bangladesh for organizations including ActionAid, Patagonia, Circle Economy, Waternet and SingularityU. Themes have included: The Future of Work, Circular Economy, Environmentally Friendly Transport, City of the Future, etc.

Kids will present their ideas to each other and at the end of the day to a panel of experts, their parents, and a public audience. With this workshop, we are highlighting the ability of the children to imagine and design a better future for us all.

Lunch will be provided for all young participants. Hurry up, there are only 40 spots available!

Aly Velji

Aly Velji has been involved in the design industry for many years specializing in both residential and commercial design. Having appeared on HGTV, CityTV and CTV, Aly has become the go to design, décor and lifestyle expert. His work has been featured in several national publications. Incorporating both current and classic trends, he ensures that he creates original and timeless designs for all of his clients. Mixing different furniture styles from modern to traditional and using pattern and texture have becoming one of his signature statements.

Vancouver-based designer Ben Barber and LA-based designer Leah Ring from Another Human in conversation with Haily Zaki, Founder of the LA Design Festival. Discussing the similarities and differences in their individual creative process, the pair will uncover how their exploration of colour and character of shapes create works that for each designer are sculptural and modern – playful with a practical twist.

This event is part of THE MIX, a unique program at IDS Vancouver that includes displays, installations and talks both onsite and off. The program is in partnership with the LA Design Festival and Design Milk

Never satisfied with just skimming the surface, we’ll cover the big-picture evolution of how today’s families and individuals live, how technology and sustainability plays an ever-increasing role, and how you can look for ways to avoid making design choices that will quickly become outdated. Come hear what’s on the horizon.

Industrial designer and prolific visionary Karim Rashid is one of the most unique voices in design today. With more than 4,000 designs in production, nearly 300 awards to his name, and client work in over 40 countries, Karim’s ability to transcend typology continues to make him a force among designers of his generation. Karim is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences globally, aspiring to change the world by making design a public subject.
