Western Living Magazine has been celebrating West Coast design for over 45 years, and this year’s exhibit from the award-winning publication brings the region’s amazing local maker culture off of the pages and onto the showroom floor. Making It! is a brand new display designed by Mitchell Design House and constructed by Blackfish Homes to spotlight the very best furniture makers, textile artists, ceramicists and industrial designers (including WL’s own Designers of the Year winners) who are living, working and creating in the West today.
Born from a desire to produce functional lighting, luminaire design and manufacturer ANDlight aims to create honest products. With an authentic approach to the design process, the production, and the way of conducting business, ANDlight has established itself as a brand with substance since its launch in 2013. It proposes approachable products that are timeless in form and reliability, refined in aesthetics, with an astutely applied touch of playfulness. ANDlight’s luminaires are designed, built and assembled in their native Vancouver, Canada.
Ben Barber is a Vancouver-based furniture and lighting design studio with a mission to explore the character of shape, emotional resonance in colour, and their unique interplay with materiality. The result is exceptionally crafted pieces that are playful yet refined.
Division.12 is a manufacturer of contemporary metal furniture located in Ontario, Canada. Their collection is built to last through the use of quality materials and seasoned craftsmanship.
As the primary manufacturer, Division.12 controls every aspect of production, ensuring the integrity of each product from prototype to final installation. Their passion for developing new furniture is rooted in the elegance of modernist design and driven by an appreciation of clean forms, brilliant colors and the deep, rich quality of natural materials.
Endeavour Neon is a neon bending studio based in Vancouver, BC. Founder Andrew Hibbs grew up learning and perfecting this trade from his father, who used to bend neon out of the shop in his back yard. From this deep passion, Andrew created Endeavour Neon to keep this dying art alive.
Jeff Martin is a contemporary furniture designer based out of Vancouver, BC. His small studio serves as an exploratory research/design lab and manufacturing facility.
The studio is best known for its design systems -- Shaker, Painted, Neolith, and Excavated. The studio at Jeff Martin Joinery analyzes the intrinsic nature of elemental materials, and responds to the material characteristics in obscure and invented methods. The Vancouver-based studio has been in operation since 2012.
Natalie Gerber is a contemporary textile design studio. Their fabrices, all handcrafted in Canada, embrace an ethic of environmental responsibility and a passion for community initiatives in support of sustainable futures.
New Format is a multi-faceted design studio based in Vancouver, BC. It was founded by Henry Norris, who is a self-taught designer and craftsperson with a diverse experience starting with welding dumpsters, through to precision architectural craftsmanship, and resolving with the creation of his own studio practice in 2016. The studio engages with projects both locally and internationally, from single pieces of furniture to entire spatial installations.
Oliver Apt. was born out of the desire to create beauty and simplicity in everyday furniture and objects. Defined by a timeless and functional aesthetic, Oliver Apt. designs and manufactures furniture for design-minded people who are passionate about the way they live.
