Virtual Talks.

Rebirth: The Death of Design.

Presented By

Thursday, October 1 | 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM PST
Virtual Accredited Seminar | $20

[AIBC 1 Non-Core LU]

Speaker: Ian Rolston, Founder, Decanthropy

The year 2020 created unimaginable shifts in how we live, ushering in a time of certain uncertainty. The design industry was not immune. In the wake of the pandemic, firms laid off staff, restricted resources, and limited services to maintain feasibility - all to establish a new normal based on old ideals. Have we missed our moment?

The Rebirth: The Death of Design explores how a world in crisis presented the greatest opportunity to reimagine the profession of design and our future world as it should be. Topics include an introduction to the 5 crises that limit creativity, the new design economy, and the creatives: a new state of mind. Each topic will provide insight, strategies, and approaches to reframe the future of an adaptive, resilient, and sustainable design industry.

What Is a Home? How Design Can Facilitate Community and Familial Relations through Our Basic Need for Shelter.

Presented By

Thursday, October 1 | 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM PST
Virtual Accredited Seminar | $20

[AIBC 1 Non-Core LU]

Speakers:
Ross Bonetti, Owner, Livingspace
Martha Sturdy, Owner, Martha Sturdy
Gaile Guevara, Founder & Creative Director, Gaile Guevara Studio
Moderator: Anicka Quin, Editorial Director, Western Living Magazine

Inspired by the Capture Photography Festival public art installation (2016) Hot Properties, our esteemed panel of experts will discuss the idea of “home.” The conversation will touch on the home as our basic need for shelter vs. homeownership as an investment. Panelists will discuss how these last few months of spending a significant amount of time in our homes may have shifted their approach to design in their discipline. Moving forward, will we value multi-generational homes or concentrated dwellings such as apartment buildings differently? How important are the material objects and art in a home vs the structure? Which element is vital to the creation of the feeling of home? Hear from the three panelists in their unique design fields.

Fostering Change: How Design can Encourage Inclusivity and Diversity.

Presented By

Thursday, October 1 | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM PST
Virtual Accredited Seminar | $20

[AIBC 1 Non-Core LU]

Speaker: Karin Bohn, Principal, House of Bohn

The amazing thing about design is that it can spark new ways of thinking, even behaving. It can foster change and promote inclusivity by encouraging us to not only experience space in a certain way, but also each other. There are endless elements that can be incorporated into a space. It's through design that we celebrate art, history, story and culture. With purpose and intention, design can make spaces that bring people together.

Italian Design Days with Armani/Casa.

Presented By

Opening Hours

Thu, Oct 1 | 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM PST
Tue, Oct 6 | 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM PST

Thursday, October 1 & Tuesday, October 6

Armani/Casa Vancouver
1656 W. 2nd Ave.
Vancouver, BC V6J 1H4

Armani/Casa is Giorgio Armani's platform that sets out his vision of interiors as intimate special places with a mood of emotional pleasure; somewhere to relax and entertain guests surrounded by beauty and elegance. The home, imagined by Giorgio Armani, is a place that provides the pleasure of well-being. Armani/Casa modernizes the way spaces are used with every detail being meticulously conceived to express the idea of subtle luxury. Inspirations for the collection are taken from Art Déco and Eastern cultures, blended with contemporary influences. The Armani/Casa aesthetic philosophy focuses on simple lines and perfect proportions, enriched by precious materials, refined finishes, and elegant textiles.

Canada’s first Armani/Casa showroom is in Vancouver’s Armoury District. Signore Armani’s signature is embossed on the lamp’s base and functions as the switch: touch his name and there will be light. The octogenarian Armani was involved in every aspect of designing the space. “Vancouver is a truly special place,” says the venerable fashion designer. “With the new Armani/Casa store, I was looking to convey a way of living and being at home that wasn’t just based on rationality and design, but also emotion. In the boutique, the natural light enhances the light of the materials, creating a warm environment that almost seems to float.”

This event is part of the "Italian Design Days @ IDS" organized by ITA Italian Trade Commission, the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver, and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada-West. Find more Made in Italy around you!
