The core of this garage concept was inspired by the Naturhus (Nature House) movement – an initiative pioneered by Swedish eco-architect Bengt Warne. This movement aimed to create living spaces surrounded by plants and encased in insulated glass greenhouses to take advantage of the environmental efficiencies afforded by both. Typically, these concepts can’t be applied to garage spaces on account of the necessity to contain fossil fuel burning vehicles and their associated pollutants. However, with a fully electric vehicle, these spatial, material and environmental practices can take what is often a neglected space, and elevate it into multitude of different usable, sustainable, and beautiful spaces.
At its best, Nature House functions as a self-contained ecological system. And while this garage concept does not include some of the more complex sustainability practices, various other components can be applied independently to great effect. Most prominently, the outer shell of insulated glass allows light to enter and heat to be retained via the greenhouse effect, saving significantly on lighting and heating expenditure. And for those who grow their own food, the same effect (depending on the climate) is estimated to double the growing season for plants. Furthermore, the relatively affordable structure allows for investment in other sustainable infrastructure, such as solar panels, and sustainable materials, to further reduce the structures ecological footprint.
Volvo XC40 Recharge Inspiration
Like the Volvo XC40 Recharge, sustainability is top-of-mind in this concept. As previously mentioned, the enveloping greenhouse and sustainable materials significantly reduce the structures’ ecological impact, without compromising on aesthetics. And, like the bold, considered lines of the XC40 series, this concept finds a balance between expression and function, as is typical of Scandinavian design. Additionally, both designs merge usability with versatility. The innovative and flexible features and storage of the Volvo XC40 Recharge allow the user to create their own experience. In much the same way, this concept was designed to accommodate the owner’s creativity. Whether it’s used as an indoor garden or home office, there is sufficient living and storage space for any need.
